Magazine Advertisement

To create our magazine advertisements we again used photoshop. Using the same process as before we created two adverts, one landscape and one portrait.

Using the information we found during our research, we decided that the album cover would be featured on the advert. Personally, I feel as this would help promote sells as the audience would already have an idea of what the cover looks like before going into the shop. As well as this, for both adverts we used the same font and colour. This has enabled us to create consistency throughout the different products, meaning that people will be able to recognise the link to the album instantly with a number of key features.

At the bottom of both adverts we have logos for the companies that have supported or sell the music for example, iTunes, Spotify, Play Music, Syco and Sony music. This gives the other companies involved the recognition they deserve. As well as this, if a person likes a number of artists from the same record label they will be more likely to buy the album as they believe they will like it.

Magazine Advert Research

Similarly to our digipak research, we looked on google for adverts of female soloist albums.

During our research we found that many of the adverts matched their album covers in order to create a brand identity. Some of the similarities are more subtle as they use a different image to that of their album cover. Examples of these are;

Throughout our advert research, we found that a large majority of soloist magazine adverts have an smaller image of their album cover in the corner. As a group we liked this idea as it allows new audiences, as well as existing to know what the album cover looks like before buying in it. By knowing what the cover looks like it may increase the sales as it will make it easier to sport whilst in shops or online.

In all of the magazine adverts above, none of the artists are looking at the camera, which helped us to decide which picture to use for the advert. By looking away in the advert it could make the consumer feel less pressured in to buying the album, which may have a reverse effect because they think you are being nice to them.

Final Digipak

To create our digipak we used a software called photoshop. The software enables you change and manipulate images using different tools.

For the CD we used a picture of Chelsea holding the remaining pink rose from the music video. This gives the audience a point of reference when looking for the album in a shop after watching the video. As well as this, we broke the genre conventions of the artist looking at the camera, this could suggest that she is daydreaming or thinking about past events. We also placed Chelsea's name and album title in white. The font used is the same Luna font used in the music video to create continuity.

We started with a template for a digipak found online, this helped his to place the images quickly and in the correct location.

As well as this we decided to use similar colours throughout. The colour was chosen from the rose using the colour picker tool. With this colour we made the back cover plain and used the same font and colour from the cover and the music video for the tracklist. Under the tracklist we added a copyright warning which is a convention of all forms of media as well as a barcode, syco logo and sony music logo.

We then did the inside of the digipak. For this we used a picture of a pink rose to cover the inside three parts, this will match the image on the CD. On two of the inserts we have added the lyrics for meant to be so that her audience can follow along to the song.

As a final touch we added an acknowledgements page, where Chelsea wrote a message to those who will buy the album. The background for this is the same as the back cover, with the colour from the rose.

Digipak Analysis

As part of our research, we looked a number of female soloist digipaks;

From this research we found that it was common for the artist to be on their digipak and for the album name to be displayed clearly in a contrasting colour. As a group we have decided to follow these conventions when creating the digipak for Meant to be.

Final Music Video

This is our finished product, Meant To Be by Chelsea Watts;

Due to the audience feedback, some of the video has changed, such as the titles and credits which were removed. As well as this we made some more colour corrections to help the overall emotion of the music video.

First Draft VS Final Music Video

We created two versions of our music video, one based on our previous feedback.

This is our first draft;

After uploading our first draft onto youtube, we asked more people for audience feedback. This was to help us understand what we did well and what we needed to change.

Our main question was about the titles. Although we originally liked our titles, we started to change our mind. The majority of the people we asked said that our titles looked good, but they were not a convention of a music video. It was suggested that they looked more like the titles from a short film, which was not our intentions.

Titles - version 1

Titles - version 2

After the feedback we decided that we would move our titles to the corner of the screen and in a smaller font size to make them more conventional.

Titles - Version 3
As well as this, during our feedback we were also told that our end credits were too similar to the end of a film and that they were not conventional to a music video. Instead of changing these, we decided that it would be better to remove them.

Editing

To edit our music video we used an apple based software called iMovie. This is a basic editing software that allows you to cut clips, change clip colouring and insert transitions etc. We started editing our music video on Monday 10th October and we had the first draft completed Friday 21st October, with some further alterations taking place after half term that made our final music video.

When we started editing our aim was to keep as close to the storyboard as possible as we liked our original idea, but quickly found that this was difficult to do as during the filming process we had changed some of the camera angles and props, such as the dice changing to the cards. As well as this due to the windy conditions some of the clips had to be removed because of the poor quality or cut to make them shorter.

Over the editing period we had a number of technical difficulties. The first issue that arose was that some of our footage would not upload onto the Mac as it said the file type was not compatible. We managed to solve this problem by uploading the footage via iMovie instead of straight to the Mac.

Our second issue over the editing period was that on numerous occasions the Mac would freeze whilst we were editing. To resolve this issue originally we had to switch the Mac off by the plug and reboot it again. This caused us to have to waste a lot of time as in some lessons we would have to reboot the system 3-4 times. After a while this technique stopped working and we were unable to edit at all. To try and save our work from being lost we duplicated the file so that we would have a back up. This worked and we were then able to edit without the computer crashing and at a quicker pace.

OUR PROCESS!

1. Firstly, when we started editing we had to upload the footage from the SD cards onto the computer and created a new project.

2. We the placed the audio file into iMove, so that we could place the clips roughly in to correct area according to the storyboard. Once the clips were in the correct space we would start to cut them down to the correct length.

3. After we had got an idea of the clip timings, we started to insert our transition. An example of this is the fade transition between each clip of the dying flowers. For the rest of the clips we mainly used straight cuts to emphasise the different transitions when they appeared.

4. When we were happy with the clips lengths and transitions, we decided to add in our titles in the font Luna from dafont.com

5. We then added some other final touches, such as colour corrections and zooming. As well as ensuring that the clips were correctly placed. Especially the ones where Chelsea lip synced.

6. When we were happy with the product we exported it onto my memory stick so that it could be uploaded to YouTube.

Filming

Date: 7th October & 8th October 2016
Location: Charlie's House, Whitchurch Green, Tree/Covered area

On the 7th October we went to Charlie's house to film his sister, Chelsea's music video. When we got their we discussed our ideas with Chelsea, before setting up the tripod to film the first scene.

Overall, the filming went well. For some scenes we found them difficult to film as the tripod had to be positioned in awkward angles, for example when filming Chelsea laying on her bed with the toy octopus, Charlie had to stand on a chair and hold the camera manually. The difficulty with this was that Charlie had to hold the camera very still so that the shot would match the rest that had been filmed using a tripod, as well as this during this scene we were all laughing which made the continuity difficult to achieve.

In order to match Chelsea's lip synching to the music, whilst filming the scene we played the song in the background. This enabled Chelsea to make sure that the words were in time as she sang along to the track. By having the words at the correct timing it will make it easier to edit.

A second difficulty we had was that, when we shot our exterior scenes the weather was really windy. This meant that we had to hold the tripod securely otherwise it would have fallen over or cause the shot to become shaken. If the footage would have still been poor quality after holding the tripod we would have had to film the scene on a different day when the weather was better.

As well as filming, we also used the opportunity to take photos for the digipak and magazine advert. This went well and we were able to find a way to incorporate the rose into the shots. Here are some of the pictures we took;

Final Costumes

Although we originally had a plan for our costumes, on the day these changed slightly due to the weather.

Due to the weather on the days that we filmed, we decided that it would be better for Chelsea to wear jeans and a colourful jumper as it was too cold. The costume that she was supposed to wear was an autumnal dress.  This costume had the same effect as we wanted her to have a more bright and cheerful look compared to the song's theme.

For the interior shots during the day, Chelsea wore a green long sleeve top and dungarees. This created a casual feel that our target audience would be able to relate to.

For the scenes shot during the evening, Chelsea wore a light pink dressing gown to connote to the audience the time of day the scene was taking place. Although this was not our original costume idea, I feel as if it worked well as it added a girly aspect to the music video.

The final costume we used, was Chelsea in her work uniform. This helped to make the character more relatable as it implies that she has another job apart from singing which bridges the gap between non-singers and singers.

Shooting Schedule

Before our filming, we made a shooting schedule so that we would know what we had to take and the order we were shooting in. Here is our shooting schedule;
